This thematic call aims to promote the primary utilization of AI within the community and is inspired by the European Commission 2024 Work Programme, which was recently announced. The Commission has articulated a visionary initiative to facilitate access to European supercomputer capacity for ethical and responsible artificial intelligence applications within this comprehensive strategy. This undertaking is emblematic of the European Union's commitment to fostering innovation, ethical AI development, and the nurturing of emerging AI-driven innovations.

Projects capable of significant use of AI workloads and GPU-accelerated computing on the LUMI supercomputer are also eligible for this thematic call.

The call period and the evaluation of applications will be in an accelerated mode, and only in terms of technical readiness, so utilisation of the LUMI-G supercomputer can start as early as 1 December 2023.

SPECIAL CALL ON IMPORTANT SOCIETAL CHALLENGES: ACCESS FOR AI AND GPU ACCELERATED APPLICATIONS

Computational resources to be distributed in NODE HOURS:

LUMI-G: 188,000 node hours

Maximum allocation per project: none; we encourage ambitious applications.

Technical parameters of the GPU accelerated part of the LUMI supercomputer: The LUMI-G compute nodes are equipped with four AMD MI250X GPUs based on the 2nd Gen AMD CDNA architecture. A MI250x GPU is a multi-chip module (MCM) with two GPU dies named AMD Graphics Compute Die (GCD). Each of these Dies features 110 compute units (CU) and has access to a 64 GB slice of HBM memory for a total of 220 CUs and 128 GB total memory per MI250x module.

2-page application deadline:

3–26 November 2023 (3 weeks)

Eligible applicants:

An employee of a Czech research organisation

How to apply:

Applications will only be accepted in English.

The application form:

Please submit the form via the web portal.

The period to use computational resources obtained:

The allocated computational resources can be used from 1 December 2023 until November 2024.

Call type: Access for Thematic HPC Resource Utilization

Evaluation of applications:
The application will be evaluated by HPC experts from IT4Innovations only regarding technical readiness to use the GPU-accelerated part of the LUMI supercomputer and the justification of the requested resources. The AI-based applications may be prioritised, and all projects demonstrating technical readiness in GPU utilisation will be considered. The applicant will be notified of the outcome of the competition on 30 November 2023 via the IT4I website. Further, e-mail notification will be provided.
