we provide state-of-the-art national supercomputing infrastructure

IT4Innovations is a strategic research infrastructure in the Czech Republic and, together with another two infrastructures, CESNET and CERIT-SC, constitutes
e-Infrastructure of the Czech Republic called e-INFRA CZ.

The first supercomputer installed at IT4Innovations was Anselm (94 TFlop/s, installed in the summer of 2013), the operation of which ceased at the beginning of 2021. Just after its launch in 2015, the Salomon supercomputer, with a theoretical peak performance of 2 PFlop/s, ranked 40th in the TOP500 list of the most powerful supercomputers in the world. The operation of Salomon ceased at the end of 2021.

Nowadays, we have been providing our users with a specialised NVIDIA DGX-2 system for artificial intelligence with a theoretical peak performance of 130 TFlop/s as well as the extension of the Anselm supercomputer, Barbora, with a theoretical peak performance of 849 TFlop/s built on the latest supercomputing technologies since 2019. In cooperation with the EuroHPC JU initiative, bringing together important European supercomputing centres, the Karolina supercomputer with a peak performance of 15.7 PFlop/s was put in operation at IT4Innovations in 2021. In the year of its installation, Karolina became the most powerful supercomputer in the Czech Republic, 69th in the world according to the TOP500 ranking, and ranked 8th in the Green500 ranking of the most energy-efficient supercomputers.

Apart from the supercomputers operated at IT4Innovations, Czech research communities also have access to the LUMI supercomputer thanks to IT4Innovations' membership in the LUMI consortium. LUMI, with its theoretical performance of 550 PFlop/s is the most powerful supercomputer in Europe and is located in Kajaani, Finland. IT4Innovations also participates in its operation.

The latest additions to IT4Innovations are complementary systems, which give users access to emerging, non-traditional, and highly specialised hardware architectures not yet common in supercomputing centres.

operating technologies

Our supercomputers are located in a data room with an area of 500 m2 equipped with an elevated floor with a bearing capacity of up to 2.5 t/m2. Under the floor, there is enough space for the power supply system and inlet and hot (30°C-35°C) and cold water outlets (8°C-15°C) operated within the specified temperature ranges and equipped with valves for easy connection of cold water-cooled racks.

The data room is equipped with a fire protection system based on the active reduction of oxygen concentration to about 15 %, which physically prevents a fire from starting and spreading.

The data room also has up to 2.5 MW of fully redundant power supply backed up by its redundant Dynamic UPS. This power supply is cooled by 5 separate cooling circuits equipped with 11 cooling devices of three types and power.

Part of the data room is also comprised of redundant data connections to the national CESNET network and the Internet.
